Aloha!

Looking for a percussion teacher in Honolulu?  My name is Steve Dinion, and I've been Associate Principal Timpanist and Percussionist with the Hawaii Symphony (formerly Honolulu Symphony) since 1992.  I've also performed in solo recitals, chamber music and contemporary music concerts, and collaborated with other performing arts groups like Honolulu Theatre for Youth and Tau Dance Theatre.  I recently completed an 8-week run as percussionist for the Broadway touring production of Wicked.  Over the years, I've also coached the Hawai'i Youth Symphony's percussion quartet, worked with percussion students at Pearl City High School and Iolani School, and led the Niu Valley Middle School's summer percussion ensemble program.

I have taught private percussion lessons in Honolulu for over 15 years, working with students who performed with their elementary, middle, high school, or college band, the Hawai'i Youth Symphony, and local military bands; several former students have gone on to college to study music.  While lessons are scaled to the student's abilities and goals, I encourage all my students to grow as musicians through careful practice and by nurturing their musical abilities and expressive potential.

Whether you are hoping to refine your abilities to prepare for college auditions or improve your professional skills, or are taking band or orchestra in school to become a more well-rounded student, lessons with a trained orchestral percussionist can help you find greater fulfillment and pleasure in music-making.  Young students who are just getting started can also gain important skills that will help them in all aspects of their education.  Depending on the age and level of the student, lessons cover basic and advanced techniques on snare drum, marimba (including 4-mallets), timpani, and the other orchestral instruments, as well as phrasing, rhythm, intonation, tone, and basic music theory.
